Functional Medicine Lab Testing

Don’t Guess, Test!

We use very sophisticated CLIA approved labs that provide a deeper look into what is going on inside of your body.

Who is reading your lab test also makes a big difference. Traditional medicine looks to see if you’re in the “normal range” while functional medicine looks to see if it is “ideal” for you. Is the person reading your lab, trained to read that lab? Otherwise the information can be just another point of confusing or unrelated data.

The information you receive from these tests pinpoints in detail ideal lab levels rather than average or normal ranges. Average or normal ranges only tell us where we line up with the lab samples.

Symptoms of feeling unwell: “there’s something wrong but I don’t know what it is,” like brain fog, fatigue, aches, pains, irritability and insomnia are the body’s way of telling us that something is out of balance. But what is it? Don’t settle for thinking that this is just normal aging. Run the tests.

The objective quantifiable data received from functional medicine testing takes the guesswork out of knowing how to address your health concerns. This valuable information also provides a baseline from which to start your healing journey.

The lab tests are completed in the comfort of your home and are easy to use. Each test comes with clear easy to follow instructions including pictures. The tests are then sent to the lab in prepaid containers and the results sent to the practitioner ordering them who sets up a consultation with you.

Functional medicine labs help to discover the underlying root causes of your symptoms and imbalances

The results of these tests are used along with your story to develop a comprehensive and sustainable wellness plan unique to you

The combination of functional medicine testing and yearly lab work from your PCP provides the ultimate look internally.

Functional medicine lab tests identify hormone imbalances, presence of heavy metals and other toxins, vitamin/mineral imbalances, stresses and deficiencies and gut issues.

Categories of Tests

Adrenal and Hormones

You will see quantitatively how stressors of life can affect your body in so many different and damaging ways. These adrenal fatigue, stress, hormone and energy tests will identify markers that explain the reason for your brain fog, fatigue, mood fluctuations, sexual disinterest, menopausal symptoms before menopause and much more. Mineral levels as well as electrolytes are seen in black and white. Heavy metals, mold and toxin exposure are understood.

To truly help the body age as gracefully and slowly as possible you will want to look at any of a number of parameters that are clearly measured by functional lab testing. When things are out of balance, the tend wear out more quickly. These imbalances can include toxicities like heavy metals or mold, hormones, gut function, vitamin/mineral levels, inflammation, food sensitivities and liver detoxifying.

The earlier issues are identified, the better your little person can function, learn and grow. The typical tests used for children address food sensitivities, candida and fungus overgrowth and parasites. Heavy metals, mold and other toxins may also need to be identified.

Digestion and Gut

Gut health is being identified even by mainstream medicine more consistently as the root or source of many health issues. We know that in addition to digestive problems like gas and bloating diarrhea, emotional health (90% of serotonin is produced in the gut) and autoimmune issues have direct connections to the gut microbiome. It is also important to identify any food sensitivities and heavy metal toxicities. Do you have gut issues and your colonoscopies and biopsies show inflam
ation, but no one seems to know why or how to fix it, only a treatment to improve symptoms? Do you have stomach issues and heartburn that requires continuous medication, but no one knows why? These tests can help.

Many body systems and functions affect immunity. And we know that the stronger the body is the stronger the immunity is and vice versa. This is especially important in this time of COVID-19. There are a number of markers that help indicate the strength of the immune system. We look at various vitamin/mineral levels as well as their ratios, omega 3 and 6 levels and their ratios.

Inflammation and joints

Inflammation is the body’s natural response to something gone wrong. It could be an injury, an overuse, a toxicity, a deficiency or an infection. It is literally the body fighting to correct whatever may be out of alignment or balance. Your body is not stupid!! It IS trying to correct the underlying cause. Again, we look to gut health, omega 3 and 6, vitamin and mineral levels.

Thyroid Assessing

thyroid function requires looking at TSH, freeT3, freeT4, TPO (thyroid peroxidase antibodies) and occasionally thyroglobulin antibodies. Mineral deficiencies and associated reasons for any imbalances are also identified. Stress and gut function as well as toxicities are frequently implicated in thyroid disease.

Weight Loss

You can reach and maintain your ideal weight. Attaining and maintaining a healthy weight is closely correlated with overall health, feelings of wellness as well as longevity. We know that being overweight increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, alzeheimers, diabetes, arthritis and infection just to name the biggies. But for many struggling with their weight, it may be more than calories in calories out. We need to look at hormones, stress levels, gut function and food sensitivities. (In addition to lifestyle modifications.)

Wellness is what it is all about. We all want to feel great, have abundant energy! With in-depth functional medicine lab testing you will see in black and white which systems you need to address and create a plan of action that is unique to you.
